Believe it or not, in the world of academia, there are several studies about the benefits of having friendships.  I know students have probably heard before about the dangers of peer pressure and how to be careful about the friends they choose, especially those they meet online or have never meet face-to-face, but at the last awards assembly I highlighted the positive things one’s closest “BFF”s brings to their life.

In a 2011 study, researchers found that the presence of a best friend buffers the effect of negative experiences.  In other words, friends can reduce stress!  Anyone who has moved to a new school and has found new friends or gone through a difficult time and has been comforted by their friends may already know this and think this is a no-brainer, but this study found that there are actually physiological effects… the study found that levels of the stress hormone cortisol were actually reduced in kids who faced stressful situations with the comfort of a friend.

A 10-year study out of Australia found that good friends are also good for your health… this is because friends can influence good behaviors, and, as I just mentioned, help us counteract stress, as well as things like depression and loneliness.

According to psychiatrists, Friends also help us boost our self-esteem and push us to practice more self-acceptance.  In other words, they help us with part of once of CIC’s core values, and that is having a respect for others, but also a respect for ourselves.

These are some of the examples of the benefits of friendship I talked about at our recent assembly.  One of CIC’s Core Values is to show gratitude for the experiences life gives us, both good and bad.  We should be grateful for the friends we have and the comfort that they bring.  Don’t take your friends for granted, and be a good friend.
